My kitchen pages
Being a single and liking good food brings the need
to cook and bake by yourself. The worst part of course
is the washing up and cleaning afterwards. And as
just cooking and baking for yourself becomes
boring with time I like to invite friends over sometimes.
So these pages might not fit into the picture of the others, but anyway they are mine...
Equipment
Don't believe in what people try to tell you. On TV you'll see
millions of advertisemnts and infomertials about what is neccessary
in your kitchen - nothing of it really is. What you need, to do almost
everything you want is:
- a set of sharp knives - I know, mine don't always fall under this criterion
- a set of measures, perhaps even in both imperial and metric units as most recepies on the net come in funny units like cups,
pints, quarts, pounds, ounces and so on
- some bowls in different sizes
- a handmixer and/or a blender
- cutting plates made out of wood or plastic
- pots and soucepans in different sizes, I seldomly need more than 2
- frying pans in different sizes and good quality
- a wok - I couldn't live without it, don't
ever buy one of these non-sticky ones!!!
- for sushi: a bamboo mat
- backing pans, e.g. for muffins or larger cakes
Ingredients
Except for those ingredients you need to buy as fresh as possible, there are
some which can be stored at home for years - if you don't eat them first. Some
nice-to-have ingredients:
- a rich sortiment of spices
- dried oriental mushrooms Mu-err and Shi-take
- if you like sushi: dried japanese seaweed Nori
- all kinds of noodles: from italian style wheat noodles to chinese rice noodles
- for bakery: chocolate, raisins, vanilla sugar
